Nicotine Testing

Nicotine Testing Your Employees

Nicotine testing measures nicotine levels in your blood and urine and the chemicals nicotine produces, such as cotinine. It is often conducted using urine or saliva samples. But it can also use blood and hair. Tests determine if you smoke or use any other form of tobacco.

In nicotine testing, evidence of nicotine use and suspected tobacco use are detected. Every form of tobacco has nicotine in it. Furthermore, nicotine testing can be used in various circumstances, such as for pre-employment and for eligibility into company insurance programs. Some nicotine stays in the system for an extended period after a person quits smoking tobacco products. Nicotine can be detected through medical tests in urine, blood, saliva, and hair.

Nicotine Testing for employment is a process that has been carried out by companies for quite some time now. They use this process to test the nicotine level of their employees. This is done by looking at the levels of nicotine being carried in their bodies. This is then used as a guide for employers. Nicotine use is exceptionally addictive and can cause health problems. Companies are starting to include nicotine testing in drug testing, and it’s an integral part of the screening process.

How Does Nicotine Testing Work?

There are a few different ways to test for nicotine. The most common method is a urine test, which can detect nicotine for up to three days after exposure. Blood tests can also be used, but they are not as common because they are more invasive and can only detect nicotine for a shorter period (usually about 24 hours).

Nicotine tests work by detecting the presence of cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine. Furthermore, cotinine can be seen in urine, blood, saliva, and hair. Urine tests are the most common type of nicotine test, and they are typically used to screen for tobacco use in employment or insurance settings. Blood tests are less common but may be used in some cases to diagnose nicotine poisoning. If testing is needed, Wolfe can help.

We collect the specimens and send them out for testing at our top-notch laboratory. Upon receiving your piece from us, they test it in the laboratory. Saliva and hair tests are not as standard as urine or blood tests. But we may use them in some cases.

How Long Does Nicotine Stay In Your Body?

The presence of nicotine in your body typically lasts for a few hours after you smoke tobacco. However, the half-life of nicotine—the time it takes for your body to remove half of the nicotine—is only about two hours. This means that nicotine can stay in your body for several hours after you smoke. The duration of nicotine’s presence in your body depends on several factors.  These factors include how much tobacco you smoke, how often you smoke, and the strength of the tobacco.

Nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream when you smoke a cigarette and is quickly metabolized by your body. Within a few hours, nicotine levels in your blood will significantly drop. However, nicotine can still be detected in your body for several days after you last smoked.

Results of Nicotine Testing

A moderate nicotine level indicates that you used tobacco and stopped about two to three weeks before the test. If people are exposed to tobacco smoke in their surroundings, it may be possible to test positive for a low nicotine level. This can happen, even if they don’t smoke.

If no nicotine or cotinine is detected in your system (or if only deficient levels are detected), you are unlikely to have used tobacco. Or you have not used tobacco recently.
